CHARACTER STUFF
Name: Nagisa Hazuki
Aliases: Rockhopper
Canon: Free! (character page + expanded history)
Role: Superhero
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Appearance: Here; he's 5'5" tall and 121 lbs. Upon entering the game he won't have acquired it yet, but his eventual superhero getup will consist of a black wetsuit and balaclava-style mask, with pink accents resembling that of his usual swimwear.

Origin story:
Nagisa's childhood played out much the same as it did in canon, with one very important difference: he didn't have to lift a finger to convince the swim club to allow him to swim in the relay. Of course, to a ten-year-old, there wasn't anything particularly strange about a group of precocious preteen boys having an opinion one day and abruptly changing it the next. But there was something strange about staring at your friend's chocolate milk longingly and having it handed to you without question. There was definitely something odd about telling your teacher that your nonexistent dog ate your math homework and having them give you top marks for your plight. There was something downright wrong about telling your mother that you'd rather skip dinner and go straight to dessert and have her bring you exactly that—and then wonder why she had.

The day Nagisa realized that nearly everyone around him would do anything he asked was in equal parts, a great one and a terrible one. His friends would drop every plan they had that day to hang out with him. His parents would give him as much money as he wanted, even if he hadn't done his chores, and then he didn't even need that money, because the kind old man at the convenience store would happily give him all the candy and soda he wanted free of charge. He took advantage of this for exactly three weeks before he realized how much he hated it—because with this incredible, inexplicable power came the realization that nothing anyone around him did was of their own free will. His friends didn't spend time with him because they liked him and his parents didn't give him money because he had proved he was hardworking and responsible—but because he forced them to without their knowledge. It was all so fake and he was no better than a thief, and Nagisa might have been barely a teenager at that point, but he was old enough to know that this was not the person he had ever wanted to be. But what kind of person could he be?

One day, the answer came in the form of a classmate being bullied to the point of tears. The moment Nagisa arrived on the scene, he demanded that the bullies leave her alone and they did, immediately and without complaint. As they did the next day, and the day following that, all the way throughout the week until eventually, they gave up. Of course, he ended up making a spectacle of himself in the process—wild rumors started flying, that Nagisa had placed some kind of terrifying curse on them (what if he told you to jump off a bridge) and while no one could prove he'd technically done anything wrong, he suddenly found that his classmates were doing their best to avoid him, to make sure he couldn't speak to them and get them to do something embarrassing or worse.

This went on for three years, and Nagisa—formerly one of the most outgoing and friendliest kids in his year—withdrew into himself. He was quiet, only speaking when spoken to and absolutely refraining from anything that could be taken as a command, and he never lied about anything or expressed his desires in fear that they would come true. Eventually, people forgot that they'd once called him the devil—but he didn't. As he matured, he came to realize the importance of free will and consent, and hated that of all the supernatural powers he could have had, it was one that would never allow anyone to completely trust him.

Nagisa was fresh out of junior high when the Mojave Desert incident occurred. Superheroes and supervillains had been around as long as he could remember, but at least in his hometown, people gave them about as much thought as they did celebrities—all rumors and hearsay and merely a fantasy for the children to get worked up about and young people to avoid real jobs for. But even in small town Japan, it was difficult to ignore the media coverage for this particular event, and Nagisa couldn't help but notice that everything seemed to tie back to a certain place—Los Angeles. And then he was drawn to it, because while he could hardly call himself a hero, maybe there were more extraordinary people there—people like him, who had abilities that they wish they didn't or who'd learned to be happy with them.

So, after weeks of solid research (including a heavy duty English crash course) to make sure his plan wouldn't go up in flames, he broke his no-power streak and asked his parents for one last thing: a one-way plane ticket to the US.

Surviving as a 16-year-old all by yourself in a huge American city wasn't exactly an easy task. As much as Nagisa hated that he had to do it, he knew there was no other way to avoid ending up starving on the street—so he started using his ability again. He went to the immigration offices and acquired all the legal documentation he thought he'd need, including a few stating that he was an adult just in case. He found an apartment, persuaded the landlord to waive the first few months of rent, and promised to pay him back someday. He convinced a local café to take him on as a dishwasher, so that he could at least have enough funds to purchase his own food. And then he enrolled in the nearest public high school that had a swim club, because he had no idea what else to do.

Nagisa had only been living in LA for a month when he encountered a young man being cornered in an alley by two other men with knives. He hadn't used his power to meddle in other people's affairs since he was twelve—but he couldn't keep walking. So he persuaded the assailants to drop their knives and go home, and the young man was so grateful he took Nagisa out for dinner. He turned out to be a wealthy businessman, who explained that he could definitely use such a smoothtalker at his office one day when Nagisa was out of school. Before saying good night, he left his business card—and on the back, an invite code to The Watch.

For the first time in years, someone had given him something that he hadn't expected or asked for. Not only that, but that something was an opportunity to join the very network he'd come to the city to join in the first place. There couldn't have possibly been a clearer sign that it was time for Nagisa to prove that he wasn't cursed or a demon or anything evil, but someone with the very real ability to change things and maybe even save lives.

But he wouldn't make the same mistake this time—this time, he'd go undercover. He'd take a martial arts class and learn to deal with knives and guns in case his ability ever failed him at the worst possible time. He'd get a uniform.

He'd be a real superhero.

Personality:
The first impression nearly anyone would have from meeting Nagisa for the first time would be that of an absurdly confident young boy with more energy than he knows what to do with. He's highly optimistic and always curious, leading to a surprisingly clever and observant mind under the sunny exterior. He's incredibly ambitious and possesses the hard-wired determination to ensure that every plan he has would be followed through to its last step—though his methods are often unorthodox. He never seems to run out of ideas, in fact, even when the problem being approached is a simple one that's already on its way to being solved.

That said, he's far from an academic genius. He suffers in mathematics, but adores history, which could suggest that his particular brand of intelligence would be much more useful in areas like combat strategy and politics. His social skills are similarly his strength and his weakness, as he can easily come across cute and charming to some people, but can definitely be found far too nosy and upbeat for others and doesn't see the need to tone it down. He is extremely straightforward to the point of being blunt, though he isn't necessarily unapologetic about it so much as he simply doesn't see the point in not saying what you mean. He's also a thrillseeker who seems to subscribe to the philosophy that rules are more like guidelines, and who doesn't think much of breaking into and spending the night in abandoned buildings except that it's fun and exciting and just like being in a horror movie.

But alongside his thirst for adventure is a sweet side; Nagisa is intrinsically a good person who places an incredible value on human contact and friendship. He would be absolutely unable to handle being truly alone for a long period of time, and thrives best when surrounded with people he cares about, hence the major importance he places on being part of a team. He very easily invests himself in other people's feelings, and will go to great lengths to ensure they're protected as carefully as his own. In combination with his ambitious attitude, this can easily lead to meddling in personal affairs between others—which can be a recipe for trouble, as one can imagine, but has also proved a great intuition for the complex nuances in others' relationships.

Differences from canon:
Nagisa's power has greatly influenced his personality and motivations. While in canon, he often ends up getting what he wants, it's always due to the hard work and never-give-up attitude he puts forth in doing so (such as in starting the swim club). With the sudden involvement of an unnatural force, however, all of his efforts are cheapened and reduced down to the fact that if he wants it to happen, it will happen. Even worse, as he struggles to control his power in his relative inexperience and young age, his desires end up projecting into the minds of others without his own consent. Rather than build genuine bonds of friendship, he's been led to believe that his desire to befriend them is the only reason such bonds exist (whether or not this is actually the case). As a result, he's unable to trust that anyone's positive actions towards him come of their own free will, and he believes that he, himself, is completely unworthy of the same trust.

However, this has had a minimal effect on how he has come to treat and behave around people. He has developed somewhat of a persecution complex, sourced from his history of manipulating innocent people, and believes he must make up for it by giving back and helping others as much as he can. Because of this, he's back to his friendly and outgoing self, but makes a point to avoid anyone who tries to get too close in case they become vulnerable to his whims. Given the aforementioned importance he places on close friendships, this is extremely detrimental to his happiness and is a constant struggle for him to keep up, especially with being newly separated from his family, and will be a major part of his character development within Capital H.

As for differences from canon events and relationships, Nagisa's AU timeline is diverging from a point before attending Iwatobi High School and the start of the anime. As such, he has yet to rekindle his bonds with Makoto, Haruka, and Rin, has only a passing acquaintance with Gou from when they were young, and has never met Rei. (This may be retconned with castmate input!)

Power level: D
Powers: Persuasion, primarily verbal with some instances of telepathy. Verbal commands are bound by intention (ex. reading dialogue from a book and sarcastic jokes are ineffective). Psychic commands, in the form of emotions and concepts rather than words, tend to project only when he very greatly desires something and he is not usually consciously aware it's happening.

Having spent most of his life in a small town, surrounded by schoolchildren and elderly civilians, he hasn't had much experience with resistance against his wishes, but it has happened on occasion and will doubtlessly happen far more often within the game setting. Nagisa himself is unaware of the technicalities of the ability and tends to assume that it's him rather than the target at fault (that if his power falls flat, it is only because he didn't actually want it to happen enough). In actuality, there are many factors that can contribute to how effective his ability is in certain situations.

It's important for him to focus; if he's tired, distracted, or otherwise emotionally compromised it's possible nothing will work. The target's individual trust level, strength of will, intelligence, and mental state (including mind-altering drugs and alcohol) are also major factors. Children in general are highly vulnerable, as are any adult civilians with particularly low IQ. Those with average to high IQ are typically decent targets but can definitely vary (a gullible genius, for example, would be more vulnerable than an uneducated man with trust issues). Superpowered beings, especially those with psychic abilities themselves, can be anywhere from extremely resistant to completely invulnerable.

Full mind control is not inconceivable but can only be reached at his absolute peak potential, which would likely not be for several years into adulthood, if ever. He's also in possession of strong (though entirely ordinary) swimming skills, and is competent in beginner level martial arts.

Team affiliation: Nagisa is unregistered and will be attempting to start his own vigilante youth team.

First person sample:
Dear Mom,

I've arrived safely in Los Angeles! America is exciting! I'm glad I chose California, because it's close to the sea and it reminds me of home. Ahh, not exactly like home though—it's very big and very busy! I think our family would like it here. It's very sunny and there are lots of places to go on the weekend! ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ I wish you could come visit!

I'm sorry for leaving so quickly.

Actually... I think there is something you and Dad need to know. Maybe you won't believe me, but I hope you will.

Do you remember all those rumors from when I was younger, that I was evil because strange things kept happening around me? The thing is... I'm not evil, but they weren't wrong and strange things did happen. See, whenever I tell someone to do something, they always do it. I know you want to say something like, "Nagisa-kun, that's only because your eyes are so big and your face is so cute it's hard for anyone to say no!" But it's more than that! I've told so many people to do so many ridiculous things, and no matter what, it always comes true. Sometimes, I don't even have to say anything and it happens anyway. I don't think that's normal, Mom. I don't think it's normal for anyone to get everything they want without trying at all, no matter how cute they are. I don't think I'm normal at all.

The truth is that you didn't want me to go, but I made you. I convinced you and Dad that it was good for my education to travel overseas. (And I am going to school so please don't worry about that!) But you should know that the real reason I came to America because I think I can do something with it here. There are other people like me and maybe I can learn something from them, to do something good. If I can convince bad people to turn around and not do bad things anymore, wouldn't that be amazing? Maybe I can change the world!

I'm sorry for lying to you and Dad. I promise that I am going to make you proud. All I want to be is a good person, like how you raised me. The next time you see me, I'm going to be a hero, and I'm going to make sure that you never do anything I tell you to again, just because I said so.

Please take care of yourself and tell everyone that I miss them.

Love,
Nagisa
